 Square deal cafe 1980s

When the Square Deal Café (as it is known now) opened in 1959 it was a bikers' juke box cafe in the typical style.  Before that we understand that there was a wooden building that operated as a café.

The Café sits just off the Bath Rd, known today to most as the A4, in the small village of Knowl Hill between the County Town of Reading and Maidenhead.

Interestingly the Café is only a short walk from the Seven Stars public house that was a coaching inn for travellers using the Old Bath Road.   The Bath Road was the main road between London and Avonmouth in Bristol.  Work began on the M4 motorway in 1961 between London and Maidenhead making the Café the last opportunity for refreshment for drivers using the M4 into London.

Today the Café caters for customers that value a more traditional breakfast or lunch experience then those offered by larger chains or garages.  We have a large following of regular customers from all backgrounds and trades.

We are proud to be recognised as one of the United Kingdom’s top independent truckers’ cafés and hope that you will visit us soon.

We would like to thank Malcolm and Classic Cafés in providing some of this information.
